Porsche 911 Turbo

The 1974 Porsche 911 Turbo is the first turbo model in the whole 911 series, being also the fastest mass production car at the time of its launch.

By the mid-1970s, the era of malaise in automotive performance was setting in. 0-60 and quarter mile times were a shadow of what they had been just five years before. Only Porsche seemed to buck this trend using an exhaust driven turbocharger to achieve stunning results. The 3.2 liter 911 Turbo Carrera or 930, could do 0-60 in about 4.9 seconds at a time when a new Ferrari or Corvette were hard pressed to do the same thing in less than 8.0 seconds. Handling could be very tricky because the turbo was very much and “on” or “off” thing. Boost coming on suddenly in the middle of a corner was the undoing of many 930 drivers. Flared fenders and a whale tail rear spoiler told other drivers to move out of the left lane. The 930 is an iconic car that many believe is currently undervalued.

More important, the car was nicknamed The Widowmaker due to the fact that it had a pretty high turbo lag which, combined with the rear-wheel drive, caused a lot of trouble to unexperienced drivers who attempted to accelerate in curves. The car was powered by a 3.0-liter engine which produced 260 horsepower and a maximum speed of 154 mph. Combined with a 4-speed manual transmission, the 911 Turbo could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in no less than 5.7 seconds.
